losing it all and starting again

So one advantage of my weekend in The City, and there are many, is that I was able to pick up my mac laptop from the computer people who fixed it. I looked at the repair report, and saw those horrifying words "No recovery possible".

As in, everything on my hard drive is gone.

I'm hoping that this isn't too disastrous - when I transferred from my old laptop to the then-new one, I transferred the info via burning stuff to DVD. So most of my documents will have survived. But I have definitely lost about 30 gigs of TV shows, some beautiful photos of Christmas and a bunch of flyers and invitations I have made for various events over the years.

Oh well, at least I've got the computer back, it was covered by warranty, and I will soon be able to revive my dreadful yet adored habit of watching DVDs in bed.
