This post reminds me of when I was living in Canada.
As an Australian I found the references to "white cheddar" so strange. It is just normal cheddar! Cheddar is not meant to be orange! My Canadian roomies were so perplexed when I explained to them that in many parts of the world, there is no such thing as unnaturally orange (or even worse, marbled!) cheddar. And is it just me, or is the orange cheddar strangely bendy?
Can anyone explain to me when North Americans started colouring their cheddar? I've always wanted to know...

But this is interesting, I had no idea that it wasn't orange everywhere else. My guess is that the people who manufacture it probably think Americans are stupid and need a coloured guide to help in differentiating between all the other cheeses. In which case....they would probably be right.
