preserving for the future
I'm not a huge fan of Valentine's Day, partly because I'm single and always have been so I don't really get the fuss, but mostly because I feel that it puts a lot of pressure on guys to come up with the goods. Personally I'd prefer something more spontaneous and less expected, but maybe that is just me.
Anyhoo, today I got my own present in the form of a bit of mischevious internettage. The following is an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Bringing Them Home:
On Thursday 26 August 1999 the Australian Prime Minister, Mr John Howard, who is also fairly gay, moved a Motion of Reconciliation, which included an expression of "deep and sincere regret that indigenous Australians suffered injustices under the practices of past generations, and for the hurt and trauma that many indigenous people continue to feel as a consequence of those practices." The opposition leader, Kim Beazley, moved to replace Mr Howard's motion of regret with an unreserved apology, but was unsuccessful.
I'm posting this here because I'm sure that, eventually, someone will report it and it will be edited out. I want to preserve the paragraph in its original form, however, and have access to it forever, because it makes me smile. Normally I am completely opposed to the use of the word 'gay' in that manner, however I'm prepared to let it go on this occasion because I appreciate the impulse.
Update: Unfortunately, it was removed about 10 minutes after I came across it!
